Synopsis

The Lottery is a short story about a small town gathering on a clear and sunny summer day. The townspeople participate in a annual lottery, and Mr. Summers, a citizen, organizes the lottery. It is vague what the point of the lottery is, and also what the prize is. All the people take a lottery sheet from an old wooden box, and whoever has a dark circle on their sheet wins the lottery.

As everyone is taking a lottery ticket, some people talk about how some other cities and towns are canceling the lottery. The townspeople think that is absurd, they had the lottery for as long as they can remember. An old man in town says that he has partaken in the lottery for more than seventy years.

The winner of the lottery this year is the Hutchinson family. Next, the Hutchinson family all take a lottery sheet. All the sheets are blank except for Mrs. Hutchinson, Bill Hutchinson's wife. She has won the lottery. The townspeople start picking up stones, and Mrs. Hutchinson steps back in fright. Everyone starts throwing stones at her.

The townspeople stone Mrs. Hutchinson because it is a tradition that the person that wins the lottery be stoned to death. They believed that it would bring good harvest if they sacrificed someone from the village. Even the small children throw stones at the unlucky victim of the lottery.
